The owners of this beautiful, late Georgian former manse situated in the East Lothian village of Prestonpans have opened their doors to give us a grand tour of their home and the colours they have used to restore the property. ‘Winfields’ is a house full of both history and beautiful proportion. It dates from 1782, with the front Baronial extension added at a later date, 1834. It is an impressive house arranged over three floors and set in an idyllic position within its own walled garden grounds. The property is located within the Harlawhill Conservation area which also includes the Battle of Prestonpans Battleground, it has been at the heart of the neighbourhood for many years and as well as being the manse to the nearby church.
The owners, both committed conservationists dreamt of restoring the house to its former glory and the game changer for them was when they discovered our natural and breathable paint range.

“With our love of historic architecture and traditional building methods, my husband and I have taken on some pretty challenging renovation projects. Our current house, an 18th century manse with a 19th century Baronial extension, was in a state of disrepair and we were keen to bring it back to life properly. Discovering interior paint of such a superior quality as Edward Bulmer Natural Paint was a game-changer. The sheer aesthetic joy of the paints invigorated us to create rooms that are far more beautiful than we originally envisaged. With the rich pigments and natural materials, the colours are gorgeous, bounce light like a tennis ball, and have such a liveliness to them that we feel we’ve truly created a happy, healthy, beautiful home.”

Katie and Adam have embraced colour at the same time as preserving the proportions and beauty of the house and its position. Most importantly through their colour choices they have created a gentle flow and complete tonal harmony; not through just playing it safe with neutrals but through choosing colours they love from our natural paint range. Edward creates our colours from the same family of 12 earth & mineral pigments resulting in all the colours working seamlessly together whether complementary or contrasting shades. In fact, by the end of the renovation, this house was transformed and has taken the award for having the most Edward Bulmer Natural Paint colours in Scotland to this day…
Dining Room in 'Pomona'

“The Roman goddess Pomona stood for orchards, fruit and abundance in the natural world. How fitting then to use Edward Bulmer Natural Paint’s ‘Pomona‘, a glorious, elegant green, in an 18th century dining room that happens to look onto a rather old orchard- which sounds impossibly romantic but the dogs eat most of the apples before we get them. Plastic-free, toxic-free paint with unrivalled colour and depth.”

“Beautiful @catherinerowedesigns on new curtains next to lovely “Laylock” by Edward Bulmer Natural Paint in an 1840s bedroom. I still need to put the pelmets up but rather enjoying the simplicity without them.”
